Tried this new twist-out method for my bangs today

and absolutely love the results! I'ma hafta try to do my whole head like this sometime in the very near future.
Please ignore the awkward angle of my face.

Tried it at home:

The results from my attempting to style my hair like the woman whose picture I posted on Friday:

Could have been better, could have been worse. Will most likely be experimented with again.

Sometime this weekend

instead of being even remotely productive towards my thesis, job applications, or coursework for next week, I'm going to spend about an hour or so (hopefully just about an hour or so) attempting to mimic this:

Chunky twists in the front, puff in the back, cuteness all around. Let's see if I can pull it off.

Will post pics when I'm done! Whee!

THE MOST AMAZING FROHAWK I'VE EVER SEEN:

If I can successfully get a fro-hawk to look like this, I can die happy. And I might wear it EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I have a confession.

This is something I usually don't tell people, because it's, well, embarrassing. It kind of goes against everything I stand for. But enough sweeping this little problem under the rug and pretending it doesn't exist, I am reclining on this couch figuratively standing up to admit, here and now, that I am a black woman who doesn't know how to braid hair. And I would very much like it if someone taught me, because there are a lot of cute hairstyles I could do if I knew how to add a cornrow or two.

Look at this cuteness!

Oh yes, I will need to experiment with ways to achieve this. (I guess I could just ask her...)

Sometimes I really want to experiment with stretching my hair

I need to find a method that wouldn't disrupt my natural curl pattern though...my hair wasn't as shrunken when I did the twist-out, but I didn't like the way the twists interacted with my curls...

Anyway, this is gorgeous and if I could ever find a way to emulate, my life would rock:

Add to my list of hair things I wanna try:

I want to experiment with parting my fro. Probably a side part, like I used to do when I straightened it. This would probably have to involve second day hair and clips in overnight to stretch my hair in opposite directions so the part would be defined. It would also probably require that I own a comb to make the part... [I do detangle, fyi, just using a Denman brush because it works better for me.] Something a little like this would be fairly awesome.

I'ma hafta revisit bantu knots

I tried them without much success way back when I first went natural, and have eschewed them ever since, but LOOK AT THIS WOMAN'S CURLS. LOOK AT THEM. And that knot-out tied back with the little bow? TO DIE FOR.

Images are of Chelsea from her blog, Curly and Young.

Bantu knots. I'm sure some of y'all were looking at me like "Whatchu talkin bout, Willis??"
(I wouldn't actually go out somewhere looking like this. This would most likely be an overnight thing, or  one of those thesis days when I'm not leaving my room.)
Post-knot curls. I think If I combed my hair before putting the knots in, I might be able to achieve similar results. It's always a gamble trying to curl already-curly hair, though.
THIS. WANT.

So I've Been on a Now Not-So-Secret Mission

alongside the mission of learning to do cute things with my hair. One of the best (and easiest) ways to do something cute to my hair is to pin a section back with one of those nifty little hideable combs and put something cute in it. Cute things could also decorate the side of a fro-hawk or some other more detailed style, plus, come on, y'all know me...how have I been missing out on this opportunity to accessorize/COLOR-COORDINATE? (Matching is seriously one of my favorite things to do. There was a girl who came into the library one day whose HEADPHONES matched her DRESS and I almost died of jealously.)

Sooooooo...the results of my interwebz-hunting and gathering thus far:

(Ignore my messy bed)

What do y'all think? I'm really excited by what I have so far, but also really interested in seeing if people have any suggestions for what other types of things I could get and/or know any cool places to look for hair accessories (etsy and ebay are my main places right now, and Forever 21 which surprises me).

New Summer Goal: Learn to Do Things with My Hair

I always hear lots of my friends who are natural talk about how much they love the versatility of their hair. Now I'm not down for versatility when that word means heating my hair or hiding it under a wig/weave, but I've come to realize that wearing my hair in the same totally free unstyled way it naturally falls, while easy and convenient and cute...is kind of boring.
When I first went natural, it was like I'd started a new love affair with the fuzzy black spirals growing out of my head. I was always trying to find the best product, the best technique...but once I found a regiment that worked for me I fell back, only trying a new product or toy for my hair on rare occasions. My hair has become one of my most defining features over the course of the last 16 months since I decided to go and stay natural--people who meet me now, when they see pictures of my old straightened hair, don't understand how that ever could have been me. My curly fro is me.
And I love that. But I am anything but static and predictable. I love being a wash-and-go kind of girl, but some days that has to leave room for some styling. I want to change it up sometimes. The basic fro will always be there, don't worry, but I wanna...play with it a little. I already have a bunch of combs, bobby pins, and headbands...I rarely use them. But now, this summer, I will have them at the ready. I will scour the interwebs for naturals with similar hair textures whose styles I love, and I will try to emulate them. Maybe I will add my own twists/flair. It's gonna be an adventure!
