Twisteddddd

So on Sunday afternoon I was bored and looking for a way to make catching up on my summer TV shows be somewhat productive to my overall life, and decided that I was going to try this whole twisting my hair thing. I'd heard a LOT of talk about twisting both as a protective style and as a way to get a more defined curl pattern throughout the blogosphere and at the Curly Pool Party I went to in NYC the weekend before last. I told C I didn't understand what the big deal was, I liked my curl pattern. She told me I should still try it. I told K about it, he asked why I didn't try it. So...what the heck, I figured. And, without consulting anyone or anything (but having had a general sense of what the idea was from all the blog posts I skimmed/conversations I half-listened to), I grabbed a small section of my newly deep-conditioned hair and started twisting.
A little over an hour later I was done about half of it and my fingers, particularly my thumbs, felt like they were going to fall off:
Exhibit A
So I took a break for a little while before doing the right side. Then I put lots of leave-in conditioner in them, wrapped them up, and went to sleep. The next morning it was WEIRD trying to avoid getting my hair wet when I was in the shower; it would have been useful to have a shower cap again. I was like, hmm I should do a blog post about this twist-adventure, so I took some pics when I got home from work of how I rocked them on Day One.
Yes, that is one of the pairs of REALLY COOL EARRINGS I got from etsy, in case you were wondering.

A little closer for those of you who like detail.

I <3 making funny faces.
And then I wrapped them up and went to sleep again.
My wrap is actually a hood. It's easier, haha.
And so many people liked my twists on Monday that I decided to leave them in on Tuesday:
And then it was rainy yesterday, so I left them in for a third day:
But by this point K was all, Mm, they're starting to come out. You gotta keep them lookin right. And I hate when he anyone starts criticizing me, so I knew that I would take them out today.
After the twists come...the twist-out!

It's definitely different. It moves more than my normal fro does. Curls are defined and stretched, which is what I was told would happen. It's growing on me. I'm not used to seeing my curls look different, I guess. I don't dislike this, though! And I really liked having the twists, they were fun. I could headbang appropriately again. Anyway, we'll see if this journey will be repeated. The twists seem kind of high maintenance; I wonder how people keep them from untwisting!

  1. Hey! To make my twists stay in (and retain moisture!) I use Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Hold Smoothie. It moisturizes my hair like no other and leaves a remarkable curl. After using that, I can wear the twist out for like a week. No lie. And the moisture it adds makes my hair oh so soft.

I've decided it's hair crack. At least that's what I refer to as when I'm talking to my friends...

    Anyway, try it!

  2. Hey wow I have that! I got a free 4oz container at the Curly Pool Party. Didn't think to try it for these, but I totally will next time. Thanks for the tip!
